Day 3 – Eger & Tokaj

Splendid Residence of the Hapsburgs

Tour the magnificent home of the Hapsburg Dynasty, built to rival the sprawling Château de Versailles. With your guide, drive just outside the city center to the monarchy’s fabulous summer residence. In 1569, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II erected the original hunting lodge here and called it Schönbrunn, meaning “beautiful spring.” In 1775, Empress Maria Theresa, the only female ruler of the Hapsburgs, added the grand neoclassical Gloriette colonnade so she could have sweeping city views. Pedal Along the Danube on a Scenic Ride

Explore nature along the Danube River and pedal at ease by electric bike, or e-bike. Meet your guide at the ship; after a short safety briefing, you will don your helmet and set off. Your guide will lead the way, highlighting points of interest and regaling you with stories as you cycle. See the Klosterneuburg Abbey; according to legend, Margrave Leopold III founded the monastery during the 12th century. On his wedding day, his wife’s veil was seized by a gust of wind and later found here. Enjoy a short stop for refreshments and take a ferry ride across the Danube, pausing to gaze at the scenery before continuing your ride along the river. Cycle past Donaupark, once a derelict site and now a picturesque area celebrated for its beauty. Admire the view of the Danube Tower and surrounding lakes. After your bike ride, you will return to your awaiting ship.
