Tell el-Amarna, Egypt

  • Sailboat moored on riverbank near cliffs

Tell el-Amarna preserves the ruins of Akhenaten’s royal city, one of ancient Egypt’s most remarkable short-lived capitals. It was founded during the 14th century BCE by Akhenaten, a pharaoh who turned away from the Egypt’s polytheistic religion to solely worship Aten, a solar deity. Here, palaces, temples and residential quarters once spread across the desert plain. The dry conditions of the area and the city’s abandonment have preserved the foundations, allowing visitors an in-depth look at the layout of an ancient Egyptian city.
