The Norse goddess of oaths, Var, is a truth seeker. She oversees all agreements and contracts, particularly marriage vows made between men and women, which were known as várar in old Norse. Hence, she is the goddess of betrothal.
From the goddess Var, nothing can be hidden. She is wise but severe, and will not hesitate to punish those who break their vows. Through Var, the word is the will.
Var is one of eleven handmaidens that attend Frigg, goddess of marriage and motherhood, and favorite wife of Odin, god of wisdom. Through fidelity and close attention, Var serves her mistress well. Her symbols are the oath ring and hearth fire.
